A large man with brown hair, clad in chainmail with a large sword strapped to his belt, stood before a stern faced, bald elf with pointed ears that sat behind a large desk and looked him over with piercing green eyes. “Are you sure that was what you saw Ames,” the elf said in a haughty snarl, “or was it ale that brought forth these conjurations from your mind?”

The large man, not fazed by the elf’s sharp tongue, bowed and slowly replied, “No Lord Tirfani I am sure of what I saw, a Tigerean girl transformed into a blue dragon before my very eyes. It nearly scared the life out of me! I swear to you in the name of Jikadel that these are not the illusions of a drunk, for ale has not touched my lips this night!”

Tirfani somberly nodded, “Did anyone else besides you see this transformation?”

“Yes, there was an Elven boy with the girl when she transformed. I do not know for sure, for I didn’t get close enough to make out exactly what was happening, but it looked as if they were robbing a man in a back alley. The man defended himself and felled the boy with a crossbow bolt, but the girl transformed into a dragon and killed him.”

“How long has it been since these events have transpired?”

“It has been no more than a few minutes. I came right to you right after the dragon committed its terrible deed. I would have attempted to capture the girl myself, but I feared that I would have shared the same fate as the robbed man.”

Tirfanni nodded and rose from his chair and brushed the wrinkles out of his gray silk robes. He walked over to a shelf, picked up a yellowing skull with rubies set into the eye sockets, and mumbled a command word which made the skull grow an angry shade of red. Then, he looked into the skull’s eyes.

Ames was a soldier and spy, one of many who worked for Tirfani, the necromancer who served as the governor of Afhame. It was his job, along with the other spies, to dress in peasants’ garb and visit the city’s taverns and spread false rumors about shape shifters to garner mistrust for them among the peasants, and to keep an ear open and listen for rumors of shifters in the area. Normally when he heard rumors of a shifter in town, he just told his master what information that he had gathered. Never in his life had he expected to run into one.

Ames had been spent the evening talking with the other patrons of the Golden Mug, a tavern in the city, trying to find out if there were any new rumors of shifters floating about. After spending a few unenlightening hours there, he started to make his way back home when he saw the robbery, and the transformation. Ames was careful to pull the tattered brown robes he wore as his disguise around his chainmail so that he could watch the dragon from the shadows around the corner a building without having to worry about the beast catching the glint of his armor in the moonlight.

Rubbing his hands together excitedly, the spy made plans for the gold he assumed he was about to receive. He intently watched the elf stare into what he believed was a scrying device. After a moment the necromancer’s eyes grew wide, Tirfani mumbled a command word and the glow from the skill faded. He placed the skull back on the shelf and walked over to Ames.

“The information you provided me with is truthful,” the elf said, his voice laced in excitement, “you have indeed earned your reward this night.”

“Indeed,” Ames nodded excitedly, “I wouldn’t lie to you my Lord.”

“I know that you wouldn’t, for you know what the penalty for such a foolish crime would be.”

The spy blew out a short sigh. He had seen firsthand what terrible deaths traitors suffered at the hands of necromancers. After a short silence the necromancer continued, “Very well, you have earned your reward. However, there is much more money to be gained.”

The mention of money visibly made Ames more attentive.

“I will give you twice of the agreed upon amount if you will help me capture this girl.”

Ames looked puzzled, “But how will we know where she is? She could be anywhere by this time.”

Tirfani smiled and sighed, “My good Ames, you underestimate the power of my magic. A word of advice to you my friend, never underestimate the power of necromancy. For if you do it could be the last mistake you ever make.”

Both men chuckled at this dark statement. Ames agreed to his lord’s terms and within a moment they were heading out into the night in search of their prey.
