“Sisto's Adventurers Overview” by Mark Harmon
Adventurers are composed of aggressive individuals who see the conflicts of Grandilar as a way to riches and retirement. They live on the edge between the necromancers and the Valarians, working for hire and searching for the riches that will allow them to quit. Sometimes these adventurers get too close to their work and become madspawn, most die violent deaths, a few are turned to the Valarian cause, and a very few succeed and retire. It is the stories of the retirees successes that keep filling the ranks of adventurers.
Sisto is an adventure leader. Through guile, brawn and deception she has survived to be very good at what she does. She is not bound by any ideological baggage. She works for cash, treasure and the adrenaline rush of the danger. Sisto tries to carefully plan out each of her adventures, but revels in the quick decisions that danger forces. She is constantly analyzing each situation to determine the best course of action. The core members of her band, Thatco and Modaivis, have been with her for some time and they respond quickly to Sisto's lead.
SCENE 1:
Sisto watched as the drab, slow moving peasants walked past in single file. Each of the peasants is carrying a heavy load, their belongings.
"This job is turning out to be tougher than I thought it would be. Sure, the 300 gold is nice, but guiding these peasants to a new home is a pain. What if that blasted necro they are escaping from comes after us? He's not likely to be happy that I'm protecting these refugees! I must remind myself of this the next time somebody waves money under my nose!"
In this scene Sisto is doing a good thing, helping peasants escape to freedom, but she is doing it for the money. To pay the gold the peasants have had to sell off most of their lives work, but they are happy to do it to escape the cruelty of the Necros rule.
SCENE 2:
"I find it hard to play the fool, I Thatco, a fine wizard, reduced to doing parlor tricks and teleports for these yokels. I suppose that Sisto is right though. All we have to do is report the presence of Valarians or Shape Shifters to the necro. While we are able to talk to peasants and travelers to collect clues to ancient treasures. Some of the stories I hear do have a grain of truth. Maybe the result of this will be our big strike, enough to retire to a nice tower somewhere."
In this case Sisto has hired her team out to be spies for a necromancer and for themselves. The payment for word of Valarians is small, but the information they collect could be worth a lot. It is also possible that for a fee Sisto would give up the Necros location instead of the other way around.
SCENE 3:
Flashdancing behind the madspawn Modaivis sunk his blade deep into the monsters back while his horn flashed with the power of death. He smiled warily as he saw Thatco teleport Sisto to the bound Shape Shifter in the center of the Jikadell Temple. He also saw the skeletons rising from the floor all around the room, and felt the bite of one of the creatures weapon. My brethren would be absolutely amazed to see me now, but the money for this rescue is going to tide me over nicely!
In this scene Sisto and her band have been hired by an Elethay temple to rescue a Shape Shifter from a necromancer. They could also potentially be hired to help a character group to rescue a friend. If you're paying, Sisto is playing.
SCENE 4:
Sisto watched the trail carefully. This is a risky business, capturing a live Shape Shifter, but the money is very good, 1,000gp each!
For the past two weeks Sisto's Morovian partner, Modaivis, has been ambushing peasants around an Elethay village. He is pretending to be a mad Unicorn. He claims he wants revenge for the death of unicorns, and lets one scared peasant survive the attack. Word of this has flashed through the Elethay village. They are shocked and scared. Now Sisto waits by the path that leads from a known Valarian stronghold. She wants to meet the Shape Shifters who are sent to "save" the village. She will carefully accesses the rescue party and devises a trap to ambush the characters. They will try to subdue one or more and then have Thatco teleport them away, with Sisto and Modaivis. In the distance Thatco is watching Sisto, just in case she needs to be teleported away from anyone she meets.
In this scene Sisto and her band are trying to catch a Shape Shifter, but they are going to be very cautious, after all, Shape Shifters are dangerous. She is going to be real careful!
THE CARDS:
What follows are the basic cards I have used for Sisto, Thatco and Mordaivis. Since each play group has different card point totals I add Ace cards to each of the characters and give them extra fighters based on the card points of the players in a given game. The basic band is about 135 points.
Sisto: I use Lian Lokslay as her basic cast card. I add: Nightvision, Read and Write Gennish and Hunting. I then fill her out with ace cards such as dual strike, vigorous strikes, silent movement and persuasion, among others.
Thatco: I use the Human Wizard card as his cast card. I then add Toughness and Nightvision. For ace cards I like to give him a good assortment of Teleports, Healing Glow, Dispel Magics, a couple of Fire Fingers and a couple of Lightning Bolts. I also like to add Shimmering Aura, Dual Action and Fire Shield, if I have enough points to work with.
Modaivis: I use the Morovian Scout for his basic card. I then add Nightvision, Toughness, Muscular, Unicorn Form and at least 2 Flashdances. Since Modaivis can use Unicorn cards as a Morovian I like to add Critical Strike, Horn of Death and Dual Strike, if I can. For extra cards I like Silent Movement, See the Hidden, Listen and some more Unicorn cards like Horn of Healing.
Enjoy!
