“Refugees, Snakes and Wakana, Oh My!” by Mark Harmon In a hill terrain area a small band of refugees (human farmers and elven farmers) are attempting to start a small homestead. As the characters approach they will see recently tilled fields, a few farm animals and some roughly made lean-too. The farmers will watch them approach with trepidation mixed with a bit of fear. When within hailing distance the farmers will call out to them, inquiring as to their purposes. If the characters appear friendly the settlers will explain their current plight. This morning they were set upon by a pair of wakana marauders. One of them had tentacles and the other breathed fire. The wakana ran off to the north with a pig. The farmers are afraid they will be back and implore the characters to destroy this warped threat. If the characters do so they will provide the heroes with a relatively safe place to stay and what food they can spare.
About an hour north of the farmstead the characters will see a copse of trees. The wakana tracks go into the trees. As the characters approach the trees they will receive a mental message telling them to scram in words similar to the following: "Hey, you peoples, this is my hunting area and I don't want to be disturbed" The mental speaker is a snake (blighted beast). The wakana came through here and messed up his hunt earlier. If the characters can persuade or charm the snake he will tell characters the wakana are camped just 20 minutes away, eating pig. The snake is an evil genius, with toughness, has poison claws for his bite and draconic mindspeech to talk with. The wakana are brothers who raid for whatever they need. They take particular delight in harassing peasants and other weak folks. At the moment they are feasting on pig and plan on a return trip. Maybe a live farmer for breakfast tomorrow?
If the characters kill the wakana the farmers will provide each of them with 5 food rations and any water they might need. They will also ask the characters to stay for a few weeks and help them, as it is planting season and their is always greater safety in numbers.
Cards Used: Hill Terrain (C93), Refugees scene (U62), Elven Farmer's cast (U101), Human Farmers cast (U51), Cowardice feature (u119), Stormlands Hunters scene (C10), Blighted Beasts cast (U88), Toughness feature (U73), Poison Claws feature (C91), Evil Genius feature (U67), Draconic Mindspeech dragon (C86), Warpspawn Marauders scene (C14), Wakana Fighters cast, (C29), Tentacles feature (C18), Fire Breather feature (C24).
GM Notes (or, something always happens): 1. I have used the GM rule (3.14) to give the snake Draconic Mindspeech. 2. If the characters kill or irritate the snake they will have to track the wakana themselves. 3. If they are friendly to the snake they get 11 Role-Playing Points (Hill +2, Stormland Hunters +2, Blighted Beast +7) 4. I give an Role-Playing bonus if the characters get the snake and farmers into a mutual protection alliance. 5. These refugee/farmers are not warriors and are not prepared to fight. If physically threated with weapons, they run. If the characters decide to attack these refugees, they can steal 30 food rations, but lose 6 Role-Playing points per farmer attacked. 6. If this adventure is too easy for your players, you can give the snake a Mad Taur friend, and give the wakana a big brother who is a Wakana Berserker with toughness etc. Just add to please yourself! 7. If this is too tough for your players, remove features from the snake and wakana. |
