“Dragon Dilemma” by Lisa Bjornseth
This adventure was originaly envisoned for a Mentor character, but has been modified to be used for a group of PC's. For a mentor, simply start with Scene II and make a few modifications. This adventure is heavily dependent on role-playing and should only be used if the players enjoy role-playing.
SCENE I
Scene: Elethay Village
Terrain: any non-warped
Cast: Mother White or a Mentor, whichever you prefer
Someone is giving shapeshifters a bad name. Rumors have made it to the Elethay Village that a Dragon has been attacking towns to the south. The characters are asked to investigate.
SCENE II
Scene: Trade Village- Farnok
Terrain: any normal terrain
Cast: Human Farmers, Dwarven Inkeeper, Human Fighters
Although this village has not been attacked by the Dragon, the villagers are understandably nervous about shapeshifters. They have increased the town guard, but no one is quite comfortable. Everyone is a little on edge and strangers are eyed suspiciously. There are rumors that Gaspill, a town a few hours to the east, is constantly being attacked by a Dragon. If the characters spend much time here, they are more than likely going to get into a fist fight with a suspicious farmer. The guard will attempt to break up the fight and politely ask the characters to leave. Note that if any of the characters shapeshift, all of the guard, and several brave peasants, will attack them.
SCENE III
Scene: Trade Village - Gaspill, Bandits
Terrain: same as for Farnok
The characters should have learned that the Dragon was attacking this Village regularly in Scene II. They should head here to investigate. The villagers, actualy a gang of bandits and assassins for hire, will tell the strangers all about the Dragon's attacks. They are hoping for a necromancer to come take him away. The bandits will explain that the Dragon comes about once a week. (How soon the next attack is can be left to the GM, though I suggest not more than a day or two.) The bandits will also talk about how a lot of people are getting hurt. If they are pushed, however, no one can actualy produce someone injured by the Dragon.
Cast: Lardon Shalfer - Human Dragon
Features: Peasant, Toughness, Greater Dragon Form, about the characters card points in Dragon and Universal aces (mostly combat).
A few years ago, Lardon discovered he was a shapeshifter. Lardon took this discovery rather hard. He knew that Dragons were evil, and now he was one. He was never a very clever person and he thought hard about what he should do. He finaly came to the conclusion that he should act like a Dragon, since he was one. How do Dragons act? Well, they are evil. They summon Dragon Storms (he certainly did not know how to do that) and destroy villages (that he might be able to do). Unfortunately, Lardon was always a bit soft hearted. He attacked villages killing livestock, destroying buildings, and burning crops, but never harmed any of the villagers. Several weeks ago Lardon discovered that Gaspill was a town of bandits and assassins. Knowing that the people he was attacking were evil made him feel a bit better. His conscience had been bothering him lately. Ever since, Lardon has been attacking Gaspill. He comes about once a week. Lardon's biggest fear is that the evil shapeshifters will discover that he is not truly evil and try to kill him.
When Lardon does show up, he is ready to fight. He comes flying in in Greater Dragon Form, breathing fire. Talking to him will not work, he is in no mood to talk. If the characters attack him, Lardon will attack back. If the characters shapeshift, or are shapeshifted, Lardon will attack them. When he sees shapeshifters Lardon takes it as more proof that shapeshifters are evil. After all, they are defending a town of bandits and assassins, they must be part of the gang (perhaps their leaders). Lardon will mostly attack to subdue. He wants some answers from these shapeshifters.
There are a few possible directions to go from here. First, and least interresting, the characters subdue Lardon, tie him up, maybe drag him back to the Elethay Village, and try to talk some sense into him. (A good role-playing oportunity here.) Similarly, Lardon subdues the characters, ties them up, drags them back to his lair, and tries to talk some sense into them.
My favorite (only for experienced GM's) creates a few more plot twists. A necromancer has been watching Gaspill. He, too, has heard the rumors about the Dragon. When he sees the characters fighting the Dragon, he realized he has a wonderful oportunity. He attacks! He only has a few followers with him, perhaps only one madspawn. Innocently introduce the mad spawn... "On initiative seven, the mad spawn attacks Jeff..." Let them worry where it came from. The necromancer manages to subdue one or two of the shapeshifters (I prefer to use NPC's for this - splitting the group causes a lot of problems) and teleports off with them. Now either the characters subdue Lardon or he subdues them. Maybe the characters can convince Lardon to help them rescue their comrades. A big Dragon to distract the troops while the players go for the necromancer is always useful.
The encounter with the necromancer is left up to the GM.
